What is Happening at KIP in May:

KIP Women’s Network (Calvin Park Library) – Topic: ‘Education’

This month meeting will focus on the topic of Education. During the meeting we welcome two guests: Ms. Pettingill and Ms. Babcock, both from the Limestone Schoolboard. Ms. Pettingill holds the lead administrative role for ESL (English as a Second Language) for the Limestone School Board, Elementary panel and is also Vice Principal at First Avenue Public School and Marysville Public School. Ms. Babcock is the Principal of Rideau Public school, an elementary school in the Kingston downtown area with a prevalent representation of immigrant students.
 At the meeting we will discuss topics like: ‘how does the educational system work?’,  ‘what services are available for children with English as a second language?’ and ‘ what does it involve to work in the educational sector?’.

During the second part of the meeting our Women’s Network member Judith Beatson will share information about her education, experience and profession.

Meet your Multicultural Library at Calvin Park Branch

A day filled with activities at the Calvin Park Library:

-          Tours and Orientation Sessions: 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
-          Scavenger Hunts for Adults and Children (with prizes!): 10:30 a.m .- 4:30 p.m.
-          Multicultural Story Hour (Dutch and Mandarin): 2:00 p.m.
-          Multilingual Book Sale: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The event is suitable for the whole family and free to attend, no registration is required.
Location: Kingston Frontenac Public Library – Calvin Park Branch, 88 Wright Crescent.

Launch of KIP Business Network (Innovation Park, 945 Princess Street)

The “KIP Business Network” is a new program sponsored by the Kingston Immigration Partnership (KIP) and Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO). May 22nd will be the launch of this program.

Guest Speakers of the evening:  Sipho Ibeakanma, Ahmad Khosrawan, and Samit Sharma.

These three immigrant-entrepreneurs will be sharing their personal experiences in building their businesses.

Multicultural Storytime – May 12

The next Multicultural Storytime will take place Saturday, May 12, at Calvin Park library. Join us to hear children’s stories in Mandarin and Dutch, as well as an orientation to the library and a scavenger hunt for both adults and kids. Everyone is welcome – children and parents! Multicultural Story time is part of the Multicultural Library Project, a partnership of Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Immigrant Services Kingston and Area (ISKA) and the Kingston Immigration Partnership.

Spaces left for KEYS iSHINE – Employment Program for Immigrant Youth

Our KIP Partner KEYS is organizing another ISHINE program for Immigrant Youth. There are some spaces left!
 
Are you an immigrant or refugee youth between 16 and 29 yrs old?
Are you eager to learn about job search and careers?
Are you out of work and not in school full time?

Registration is now open for iSHINE, a part-time, 10 week pre-employment program starting April 23, 2012, which includes a paid placement and a chance to help create a television show! No cost for the program, and snacks are included! Limited spaces available! More info here iSHINE_apr_lg

What is happening at KIP in April:

- Tuesday – April 10th – 6.00-7.30 pm – KIP Women’s Network

We have the pleasure to welcome Mr. Thierry Guillaumont from Global Experience Ontario in Toronto. Global Experience Ontario (GEO) is the access center of the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. GEO offers a range of services and can help internationally trained and educated individuals find out how to qualify for professional practice in Ontario. Mr. Guillaumont will speak about what the Ontario government is doing to reduce barriers for immigrants wishing to work in their own occupations. This is your opportunity to ask questions about how to practice your own (professional) occupation in Ontario.

Our very own Women’s Network member Susanne Cliff-Jungling will present as member-speaker and she will share her personal experiences with immigration to Canada.

ICA Heritage Day 2012

The India Canada Association of Kingston (ICA) presents Heritage Day 2012 – a community celebration of the music, dance, and culture of India! This is a fun-filled family event with musical & dance performances by children & youth in colorful costumes showcasing the rich cultural diversity of India. Everyone is welcome!

Date: Sunday, March 25th, 2012
Time: Doors open at 2:00pm, program starts at 2:30pm
Location: Duncan McArthur Hall, Queen’s West Campus (map)
Admission: $12 (Admission & Snack), $10 (Admission only), $4 (Snack voucher). Free admission for children under 5.

Care For Nurses Info Session – March 24

KEYS Job Centre is hosting a second information session on CARE for Nurses, a bridging program for nurses educated outside Canada which is now available in Kingston. This information session will provide detailed information about CARE Centre services, programs, and whether or not CARE Centre is right for you.

Wanted: Multilingual Books!

As you may know, Kingston Immigration Partnership and Immigrant Services Kingston & Area has partnered with Kingston Frontenac Public Library to create the Multicultural Library at Calvin Park branch.

We are now asking the community to donate multilingual books for the Library collection. Books in any language that are in good condition can be added to the collection. Books that can’t be added will go to a special Multilingual Book Sale, planned for the spring. Proceeds from that sale will go straight into buying more multilingual books for the Library.

Books can be dropped off at Calvin Park branch, 88 Wright Crescent, or at Immigrant Services (ISKA), 837 Princess St, 5th floor.

We want your books in: Arabic – Mandarin – Spanish – Tagalog – Kiswahili – Russian – Urdu – Farsi – Hindi – Portuguese – Korean – Cantonese – Vietnamese – Turkish – and More!
